Aces Highran second in an allowance at Delta Downs on Friday evening. He got out of the gate well and appeared to be handling the track quite well. The horse to his inside, a 60-1 shot, pressed him much harder than we expected and Aces High set relativelyquick early fractions of 23.54 and 47.92. Meanwhile, the 4-horse, Great Minds, stalked a couple lengths back in 3rd place.
Aces High still led by a head when they hit the top of the stretch. The early duel on the front end cost him as Great Minds pulled away to win by about 1 1/2. Steve spoke with Eddie afterward and he tells us that Ace did in fact handle the track quite well and he was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t able to get Aces on an easier lead. While the 4-horse may very well have won regardless, it certainly compromised Aces’ chances.
